Jewelry Care - Clapping

Jewelry Care - Clapping

Clapping. It isn’t hard. It’s just putting two hands together over and over to create a sound.

Sounds easy right?

When it comes to your rings, did you know that there is actually a right way to clap?

Imagine wearing your wedding set on your left hand and your favorite fashion ring on your right hand. You’re at a ball game, it’s a close one. Your team is tied. Now they’re down by 2. Now they’re tied again. During the final minutes of a game like this, how many times do you clap? I’m sure your hands come together hundreds and hundreds of times.

While you’re getting excited, cheering and clapping like crazy, your rings are getting the worst end of the deal. Your team may have come out on top, but your rings are struggling.

A damaged ring is nothing to clap about.

Take a look at these pictures. You probably never realized or even thought about your rings being damaged by something as simple as clapping.

Well, I am here to tell you IT HAPPENS. We have seen it first hand. Clapping can cause harm to your rings and the stones that are in them.

I mean, think about it. You have metal objects that are being banged together over and over. Don’t you think that at some point they would start to show some signs of wear? And don’t even get me started on diamonds or any stones that our ring/s may have.

Take Nicole Kidman for example. In 2017 she was criticized for 'seal clapping' at the Oscars.

While Nicole may have attracted some unwanted comments, she actually knew what she was doing the whole time. When later interviewed, Nicole was asked about the attention she attracted because of the pictures of her clapping that were circulating online. She said it was because of her jewels. Nicole was wearing a gorgeous ring which prevented her from clapping normally.

"So therefore I'm clapping but it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not my own, but it was absolutely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it." Seems Nicole already knew how easily clapping could damage her jewelry.

Breaking this down a bit....Clapping with a ring on each hand creates a force similar to that of a hammer. Overtime this can damage the integrity of the ring making the metal brittle which is the perfect recipie for losing precious stones.

Moral of this story is…clap correctly when you’re wearing your rings.

      try this...

Although our jewelers can fix juuuuuust about anything, we hate to see someone lose a diamond or damage their ring in any way.

Hopefully this blog can save a ring or two from being damaged. Just remember that your jewelry isn’t indestructible. Take good care of it and with some upkeep, think getting your oil changed in your car, your ring can last a lifetime.

Now THAT is something to clap about!
